Level One – Red Sash – students are taught the basics of yoga, including alignment, common postures, breathing techniques and meditation. This level is introductory and offers the student a chance to learn postures. Yoga as a form of discipline is taught, in that, late students will be assigned a small duty in the study for the disruption. After 10 weeks the student should be able to accurately demonstrate and name in English the common postures as well as 2 breathing techniques.
Level Two – Orange Sash – Students are encouraged to meditate daily for 5 minutes and start a journal. Postures are now introduced in Vinyasa style. The benefits of the postures are introduced as well as their Sanskrit names. A level two student will be asked demonstrate and name in Sanskrit the common postures. As well students will be encouraged to try yoga at home.
Level Three – Yellow Sash -The 8 limbed path (similar to Buddhism) is introduced, handouts on ethics are introduced. A small test will be given at the end of this session, students should be able to name the 8 limbed path. Postures are held longer and modifications are introduced. A concept of the universe being interconnected by energy is introduced, in a manner to teach respect for nature and our community and the world. Discussion on how our actions affect others will be held.
Level 4 – Green Sash - Karma yoga is discussed and the student will choose a small community project to experience the benefits of unconditional giving. Postures spiritual benefits are introduced and different types of mediation will be introduced. Tools for remaining calm and focused in the outside world are taught.
Level 5 – Blue Sash - At this level the student is encouraged to speak freely and openly their needs in a manner that is positive for everyone. Students will be expected to have a daily Sadna (spiritual practice) that could include mediation, journaling, yoga postures and breathing techniques. The students will be encouraged to advance in postures if their body and mind is ready.
Level 6 – Indigo Sash - At this level we continue to build on the knowledge of the previous sashes. Students will be encouraged to create Vinyasa (flows) that support and allow them to feel good. Students are introduced to more advanced postures and are encouraged to practice daily.
Level 7 - Purple Sash – to achieve this sash the student must be able to demonstrate and clearly articulate yogic principles in their dally life. Postures continue to be deepened and explored. Students will be able to create and plan their own yoga classes for their home practice.
